The way we tell a story can take on infinite forms in this day and age. As part of my general goal to elevate The Harbinger's online presence, I introduced many multimedia elements to our school's website. As a longtime fanatic of podcasts like "This American Life," "Hidden Brain" and NYT's "The Daily," I always wanted to be able to produce audio journalism for, and about, my community. When I attended the Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute, a professional audio journalist taught us the step-by-step process of making podcasts and the components of quality audio journalism. I had to bring what I learned back to The Harbinger. In doing so, I inspired many editors and staff members to produce podcasts as well. Creating nonlinear works of journalism has allowed me to branch out and try new things, using new software and tools to broaden my storytelling media.

After an unforeseen display of solidarity through multiple NFL teams, I heard a muddle of fervent opinions. Along with a sports editor, I set out to capture a plethora of perspectives on taking a knee to protest racial injustice, the president's comments and American values. Producing a professional podcast meant I had to branch out and use new software and research techniques of editing. To make this podcast, I learned how to use Audacity, a software used by professional podcasters.
Robotics

Video journalism is a visual way to communicate ideas and news. With multimedia production comes learning curves in technology and software use. Even though I only used iMovie, a very simple program, to edit, this video on the robotics team involved many days of work and persistence to combat the tediousness of video editing.

While at the Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute, I had the wonderful opportunity of learning from a Medill multimedia professor and Medill graduate who produces documentaries. She lectured us on the basics of video journalism and because I was so intrigued, I attended the short documentary workshop. My friend and I created a video on being vegetarian or vegan at the program, as well as why each individual chose this lifestyle.
